Thank you very much Matthew, I'm glad you found it informative. I did face pulls yesterday, just in honor of this article and boy did they feel good!

Absolutely, I definitely agree with doing the chest/doorway stretch bilateraly. If you can get into a doorway and do both arms at the same time even better. Thanks again for the follow!

Excellent article - it's hard to find decent article about strengthening the lower trap region. I like how you emphasized a distant imbalance between the mobilizers (upper traps) and stabilizers (lower traps).

I love face pulls! You remind me of one of my good friends who includes that exercises in most of his client's programs who have rounded shoulder syndrome.

For the pectoral stretch can I suggest doing a bilateral stretch such as a wall corner stretch. I find this stretch a greater passive stretch versus doing one side at a time (unilateral), and always ensures that the pec is stretched to greater degree of range of motion.

PS - I'm going to follow your blog!

[...] First off, as stated in several previous posts, you must first stretch what is tight. In this case, that can be several muscles: the pectoralis major and minor muscles (chest), levator scapulae and scalenes (muscles in the neck) are the ones I would stretch first. These can be accomplished with a doorway stretch (at 90 degrees to hit the pec major and with the arm extended to hit serratus and pec minor) and the specific stretches for levators as seen in the previous post: The Flutist’s Pain Points [...]

[...] A foam roller cannot take the place of a massage therapist, but if you cannot afford to go, this is your best option. You can cover a wider area with the foam roller, and get more specific with a tennis ball, hitting your own trigger points. Remember, pain is not necessarily at the point of discomfort, it can be “referred” from another part of the body. When you press on a trigger point, you may feel that pain shoot through the body to where you felt discomfort. Dr. Perry gives more examples of this in his guest blog post Shoulder Pain Secrets.
Once you get past your first (ruined) batch it's super easy! I find that leaving it in an oven with the lightbulb on keeps it just the right temp but ymmv. Remember that middle eastern cultures have been doing this for a long time without thermometers and such, so the "incubating heat" doesn't have to be spot on. I have found that you can also strain with paper towels or coffee filters.
To make "fruit on the bottom style" yogurt add some fruit (heavy syrup, yum) to the bottom of a small tupperware container (I like the one cup size) and then spoon your yogurt on top. One gallon of milk plus one can of fruit should give you 8 servings of strained yogurt, making your final cost about 50 cents!

Thanks Angela. The one thing that makes this applicable to any musician is the commonality of dysfunctional movement. Trigger points don't care what your profession is...they hurt just the same. :) And learning about your body and anatomy is a good thing, especially if you want to keep up that durability factor for a long career.
